Basement Interior Design Ideas

Is your basement a dusty, dark storage place or a stylish extension of your home? While a basement may not often bring to mind a stylish space for living, when completed it can offer you so much in terms of both functionality as well as beauty. Whether you decide to renovate your basement to create a play area for the kids, a home cinema, a games room or to even give you an extra bedroom, bathroom or utility area, we’ve got some incredible inspiration from those who have done it before.

Sports Themed Basement Remodel

Cuckoo4Design Basement

When Julia of Cuckoo4Design was faced with her husband’s large collection of sports memorabilia when designing her basement remodel, she cleverly incorporated it as a gallery of art. Throughout the space are touches which relate to the whole family, from a drum kit to a bar area, a large TV and plenty of games, ensuring the entire family could use and enjoy the space. With stylish decorative touches from the deep pile rug, faux fur throws and nailhead trim on the corner sofa, the room is luxurious whilst also being totally family-friendly. Ski Lodge Inspired Basement Remodel

When asked by a friend to help bring some personality into their basement remodel, Stefanie from Brooklyn Limestone used the family’s love of skiing as a jumping off point for the design. Personal touches that gave the area a ski lodge coziness were incorporated throughout and the large area was zoned for relaxing, conversation and eating. Basements can often be awkward spaces but choosing a purpose for each area is a great way to ensure the entire space is maximized. See all the details here.

Of course, for many, a finished basement gives you more space for the kids to relax and enjoy and we love how Heather from The Heathered Nest incorporated this creative area for her children. With a chalkboard wall and plenty of space for creative projects, the rest of your living spaces may just get a break from the chaos every once in a while! You can see the whole remodel which also incorporates adult-friendly areas here.

Erin from Elements of Style turned her once-dark and depressing basement into a stylish nature-inspired living space with plenty of budget-friendly purchases and reusing items that were in other areas of her home. Not only is there a little drink and snacks area (complete with fridge!), there is also a home office space and plenty of storage for children’s toys and accessories. We love the natural theme too – vibrant green cushions, potted plants, flowers, feature wallpaper and botanical art all give the room an outside-in finish. See more of Erin’s basement here.

Vanessa from Decor Happy utilised her basement to create a stunning glamorous retreat for her and her daughter which incorporated not only areas for entertaining and relaxing but also exercise and meditation. The design is decidedly feminine with floral wallpaper and touches of gold throughout and warm wood finishes that give the entire space a welcoming look.
