On the warmest summer days, our porch becomes a respite. A shady place where we can relax and unwind, a spot we can enjoy with our families, a place where we can gather friends for chats long after the sun has gone down. However, if your porch has become a little neglected this year and you need some inspiration for making the most of it, you’ve come to the right place.
Here are just a few creative ways to make the most of the space you have this summer. Going outside is the new staying in.
Zone the Areas
It may seem second nature to zone off our home into how we use it – an area for sleep, an area for watching the television, an area for eating, etc. However, if your porch is large enough, why not apply the same principles? Cassie Bustamante‘s boho inspired porch cleverly allows for various activities. From dining out on those warm summer evenings to a relaxation spot, complete with a hammock.
Create a Vertical Garden
While there may be plenty of green in your lawn and surrounding areas, if your porch is small then you may have to get creative with planting. We love Ursula from Home Made By Carmona‘s simple but stunning idea of using painted common board wood and shower hooks to create a vertical garden, perfect for smaller spaces. You can check out her tutorial here.
Light it Up
While it will be perfectly lit during the summer day, taking advantage of your porch in the evenings should include multiple lighting sources. We love how Emily of Table and Hearth uses a combination of festoon lighting, LED lighting and candles for the perfect summer glow. Consider flameless LED candles as well or lanterns to create a welcoming glow when the sun goes down.
Mix It Up
When considering plants for your summer porch, we love Brook from Farmhouse1820‘s stunning mixed planters. Container gardens allow you to enjoy a variety of plants all in one place and add some colour to your surroundings too. Brook generously shares her tips to create one on her blog.
Add Rustic Details
Natural finishes are on trend this year and there’s no better place to use them than on your porch. Consider using paint effects for farmhouse style outdoors and combining it with succulents, stone, antlers and greenery as shown by Katrin from Kreativ K for a rustic look that’s restful and relaxed.
Show Off Your National Pride
Of course, many of us love to show off our national pride by hanging a flag to welcome our visitors. We love Pam from House of Hawthorne‘s idea of using a large plant pot for her Stars n’ Stripes grouping which adds a splash of colour between two white painted chairs and plenty of greenery.
And finally, don’t think you have to follow all the rules when it comes to your porch. We adore how Jersey Ice Cream Co transformed this home in the Catskills using a dark blue paint color for the front porch as featured on Design Sponge. With lots of lighting and comfy accents, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a lemonade day or night.
